Devon County Show

So today was my day off work & I spent it at the Show. Me, mum & Courts were up at stupid o'clock to get to the show for 8am (EIGHT AM!!!Bluegh!) so that we could see the inhand coloured class. We then had a wander, had something to eat, wandered a bit more, ate a bit more, watched a gun dog display, a side saddle display and the Kings Troop Royal Horse Artillery. We then ate a bit more!! Talking of eating (I believe I mentioned it once or twice!) I tried my first ever oyster today! I was really nervous about it, I was worried it was going to be gross but I was brave and popped it right in my mouth. I admit I did chew but I just couldnt bring myself to just swallow it. It wasn't gross but it was disappointing. I was expecting it to be some taste sensation (good or bad but definately something extraordinary) but it just tasted like an over grown cockle. So a food hurdle cleared but not one I'll be trying again since I think they're a ripoff!
We managed to avoid the rain til right at the end and then we were heading back to the car anyway.
All in all a good day, really enjoyed it.

So so long!

O my god - its been since forever since I blogged! So update update update!!

Going back to when i last blogged....

Sunday 9th April - Carbooty!!!
It all seemed a good idea at the time I suggested it but me & John spent a week collecting together sellable stuff (read 'crap'!) for a jaunt to the car boot sale! So at 6am on Sunday morning we found ourselves heading off to make our fortune, totally organised (after visiting various supermarkets to thieve carrier bags, make up enough change for a float & then a mad dash to John's in Teignmouth to get a pasting table to display on!) However while sat in the queue to get into the sale I lost my nerve & suggested that maybe we ought to just browse this week & sell next week but John didnt appreciate that so 6 quid later we found ourselves unloading all the crap from the car & setting up ready to Sell Sell Sell! Can't say we exactly made our fortunes (I got 24 pound john got 13!) but we are now no longer Carboot Virgins!!

Tuesday 18th April - Back to Work at Last!
So I finally returned to work. Met Spencer & the new chef, Chris, ready to get stuck in sorting stuff out ready to reopen at the end of the month. The kitchen looked like a bomb site & it was hard to know where to start really. We spent the next 2 days just cleaning & trying to organise every thing. We were finally sorted in the kitchen by Wednesday evening so we planned to come in & discuss menus on the Thursday then get on with some cooking in the afternoon nut it wasnt to be...We got in on Thursday morning to find the lazy arsed stupid builders had open the serving hatch so they could pass cups of tea out (coz God forbid they may have to walk through the door with them!) That in its self isnt too bad but when you couple it with the fact that they hadnt bothered to shut it again & had then decided to sand the restaurant floor makes it a MAJOR fking issue! The whole kitchen was coated in a layer of dust all over again. So we went to the local pub, discussed menus then...well, went home! Friday we came in and suprise suprise, cleaned the kitchen again! We had the weekend off ready to crack on for opening week on the Monday morning.
What we hadnt bargined for on the Monday was finding that the Combi oven had been broken when they moved it! We had to do all the cooking in the gas ovens which to be fair really wasnt all together successful but what can you do. On the Tuesday evening all the locals came in to see the refurbed restaurant & have a free drink (or two!) We were still working away in the kitchen trying to be ready in time for the official opening on Wednesday evening. We had a really long day on the wednesday which was also my Dads 50th birthday! I finished work at 4.20pm & was back in again at 5.30pm so only had 40minutes at home which was just enough time to assemble a fruit pavlova for Dads birthday, give him his card & then bugger off to work again!
The week was ok apart from the ridiculous number of hours we were doing but it all fell apart for me on Friday night...
Mum & Dad came to the restaurant for a meal for Dads birthday and they really enjoyed it. I didnt get home from work til about 12.30, totally knackered but unable to get to sleep I crashed infront of the TV in the living room. I finally went to bed at about half 1 but then at 2.18am my mobile went off & Mum was ringing me to tell me that they needed me to get up & come to under the motorway bridge by Exminster as the horses were out on the roads. I got there to find a policeman holding Jen (one of the horses) under the bridge. Her front leg was all cut up & she looked so thin & tired. I waited with her for Dad to arrive with the horse box then we had to get the other horses home. Megan, Courtenay's horse, had a massive cut in her chest so her & Jen were taken back home first along with Courtenay & the vet. We then had to get the other 7 horses back home. We had lots of people holding horses & two horses boxes but one horse refused to go in a box so Bill had to lead him back to our house from Exminster. We finally got them all home & I got back into the house at about 5.15am. I then had to be back in work at 10am & basically had no sleep. I didnt have a day off til Tuesday either so its safe to say I was SO SO SO tired! I then decided that given the hours & the general set up at work I just couldnt go on working there long term so on Friday 5th May I handed my notice in.
So that brings us to about now. I am working out my months notice at work then I am going to work for Shell. Whether it'll be a long term move or if I'll go back to catering (but NOT in a restaurant! I want no more split shifts & working every single night!) I really don't know. I'll keep you posted!
And I promise I won't leave it 6 weeks between posts next time, honest!!
